About

What is a storyboard panel?

A storyboard panel is a rectangle with a drawing of one specific action or moment in a story.

Panels can contain characters, backgrounds, props, FX, notes, camera indication, doodles or hundreds of pencil strokes.

What is an aspect ratio?

Aspect Ratios are the width to height ratios of an image. How wide is a rectangular image compared to its height.

Examples:

  • 1:1 - square
  • 16:9 - Full HD, most long form videos use this ratio for streaming at 1920x1080

Why care about aspect ratios? - Having an idea of where you want people (including yourself) to see your art, can inform you on what size and shape you may want your art to be. Are you creating images for movie theaters, televisions, computers, or phones? Depending on the screen and online platform, the digital export of your image or video can be different. You may want it to be taller than it is wide for social media, or wider than it is tall for a more cinematic movie feel.

How To Use

1. Start with the template on your paper.

2. For most aspect ratios, keep the two blue corner segments facing the top of your page. This helps glancing at the color coded list of aspect ratios on the back that correspond to colors on the front.

3. Drag your drawing utensil through the cutout lines creating a rectangle that connects two segments of the color you've chosen (four for gold).

4. Pick up the template to reveal a clean and accurate storyboard panel frame.

Why?

The Pocket Framer provides a convenient method for drawing consistently sized and clean rectangles for your storyboard panel frames.

The portability of the template allows you to draw uniform panels anywhere, and the consistency of the panel frames allows you to digitize your artwork with better accuracy.

You'll need less additions or subtractions when rendering a final image.

Both animation and live action storytellers can utilize the framer to better visualize and communicate their videos and artworks.

The Pocket Framer helps you make the first mark on a page and provides a little context to your drawings, especially if you plan on showing others over the phone, computer, tv, or movie screen.

Have fun drawing!

Why? Pt2

All Pocket Framers are made because the creator of this art tool wishes this was a thing when they were growing up.

Drawing wasn't easy but envisioning stories full of characters, movement, and settings was the most fun aspect of art.

Anyone who storyboards either does it on paper, tablet, or cintiq. If you enjoy drawing on paper this method plans for less work when digitizing your art. Also you don't need a printer to print lots of pages with rectangles. You just need a sketchbook.
